American Councils Leads the Way in Exchange Policy
On September 16, Executive Vice President of American Councils Lisa Choate and American Councils Local Coordinator Erin Knowles (Calvert County, Maryland) teamed up with The Alliance for International Exchange to present at the International Exchange and Study Caucus of the U.S. House of Representatives on the importance of both exchange and raising the host family tax deduction.
In attendance was Yanina Rybalka, a FLEX student from Ukraine who arrived to her host family in Dunkirk, Maryland in August. Speaking about her experience, Yanina says, "Finding new opportunities and meeting new people are one of the purposes of the FLEX program and on September 16 I had a chance to reach it. Me and my local representative, Erin Knowles, went to Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. to defend a bill which can help with finding host families for exchange students. Listening to all the speakers, who really love what they are doing, you can understand the importance of their work. I'm happy that I met very interesting and friendly people, was able to see other side of hosting students, and thus I will try to help them from my side. Thank you for everyone who organized and supported that meeting."
