FLEX Student Hosts Russian Poetry/Literature Night

FLEX Student Hosts Russian Poetry/Literature Night

2014-2015 FLEX-Russia student Yekaterina Sysoyeva hosted "An Evening of Russian Poetry" at Calvert Library, Twin Beaches Branch in Calvert, MD. She collaborated with Megan Timmens, Public Services Librarian at the branch, who also hosted a FLEX student (from Kazakhstan), to create a program of Ancient to Modern poetry. She selected several of the poems and worked with Megan to get additional readers for the event.

Katya sang a few songs throughout the program, and read medieval poetry, Pushkin, Lermontov, and Akhmadulina to a crowd of 30. Each poem was read in Russian and English. Half the attendees were Russian and Latvian expats; others were Americans who were interested in hearing Russian verse. Many people were from the area, but a two people actually came down from Frederick, MD.   Everyone was very impressed with the selection and Katya's singing; after the event she received many compliments and positive feedback about her performance.

Katya spoke briefly about the FLEX program and explained one of the goals of the program is to share Russian culture with the community. She successfully fulfilled that goal by sharing the beauty and richness of Russian poetry with the people of Calvert County.
