Our Students

American Councils works exclusively with high school (ages 15-17) scholarship students. Alumni include heads of state, educators, entrepreneurs, and more. They are exemplary citizens of their countries and carry their positive experience of the U.S.—especially their host parent or family—throughout their lives. Learn more about some of our Featured Students below.

Does your family enjoy spending time together in the kitchen? If so, Imelda from Indonesia will fit right in! She loves to cook and says: “I like it because I can made delicious foods and drinks. When I cook together with my friends, I feel happy!” Her other hobbies include being very involved in scouting, which she says has helped her to feel brave when she faces life’s challenges. She also recently started learning a traditional Indonesian mask dance called tari topeng and would love to learn American folk dance in the U.S.! She also practices martial arts. She says it not only keeps her healthy, but has also taught her self-defense.

Imelda has learned a great deal from her family and says, “My parents taught me and my sister to be strong, honest, friendly and sincere to reach success in life. I always to do my best, praying and working hard. I will never forget the people who help me to reach my dream.”

Imelda is very excited to join the YES Program because she believes that this experience will help her contribute in a small way to achieving peace in the world. She wants to meet people from different religious, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds and can’t wait to learn all about your family and American culture. Imelda hopes to share her Indonesian culture with her new host family!
