Our Students

American Councils works exclusively with high school (ages 15-17) scholarship students. Alumni include heads of state, educators, entrepreneurs, and more. They are exemplary citizens of their countries and carry their positive experience of the U.S.—especially their host parent or family—throughout their lives. Learn more about some of our Featured Students below.

Nida from Gaza doesn’t just want to explore the world; she wants to explore outer space, too!

“Since I was a little kid, my favorite hobby was counting the stars. I used to look up at the sky for a long time! As I grew up, my curiosity to discover space has increased especially after I watched interesting movies about space. I am extremely eager to be an astronaut, to travel to space, and to discover the secrets of the universe.”

In her free time, Nida loves to play all kinds of sports. She is one of one of the few girls in her city who plays basketball and says that she is really crazy about it. She also enjoys challenging her cousin to a competitive game of chess. With a house full of sisters, Nida always finds someone who wants to curl up on the couch and watch a movie together. As any teenager might, Nida also loves to spend time shopping with friends.

According to Nida’s teacher, she is always the first one to rais her hand to answer a question and is always chosen to be a leader in team projects. Nida makes her school proud by participating in many academic challenges in all fields, including science, math, English, Arabic, and public speaking. Nida is all about having new experiences! She looks forward to the day that she meets her host family in the U.S. and can’t wait to learn about American culture and values from them. She plans to be an exemplary youth ambassador from her country and hopes to teach others not only about the political challenges and internal struggles, but also about the amazing people that make up Gaza, and the loving and kind society that she comes from.
