Our Students

American Councils works exclusively with high school (ages 15-17) scholarship students. Alumni include heads of state, educators, entrepreneurs, and more. They are exemplary citizens of their countries and carry their positive experience of the U.S.—especially their host parent or family—throughout their lives. Learn more about some of our Featured Students below.

Kanykei is known to be friendly, energetic, and extroverted! She has very close-knit relationships with each of her family members and especially loves it when they play board games, or tend to their garden. Together with her mother, Kanykei likes to prepare delicious Italian meals for the whole family to try. Kanykei and her father share in their passion for science and mathematics, and she has dreamt about becoming a doctor since her childhood. She says, “I want to help and cure people! I want to be a doctor whose name will be written in history.” That is why whenever she has a free moment, Kanykei volunteers to help the elderly in her community.

She is very fascinated by Asian culture. Kanykei listens to Korean pop music, watches Japanese animated television shows, and has a great appreciation for Japanese drawings. After school, Kanykei and friends frequently head to the bookstore to explore the endless shelves of stories waiting to be read. They also like to get creative by choreographing dance routines.

Listening to classical music is Kanykei’s favorite way to relax. She hopes that she can learn how to play the violin one day and would definitely join her U.S. high school’s orchestra if possible. She also hopes to try new sports during her FLEX exchange year too, especially tennis. “My dear American family, I think you can teach me a lot of new things and I can share them with other people.”
