Our Students

American Councils works exclusively with high school (ages 15-17) scholarship students. Alumni include heads of state, educators, entrepreneurs, and more. They are exemplary citizens of their countries and carry their positive experience of the U.S.—especially their host parent or family—throughout their lives. Learn more about some of our Featured Students below.

Aliya is a family-oriented young woman who is fond of spending quality time with her family. She loves drinking tea and discussing her day with her mother or cooking and shopping together. In addition, every weekend she goes for a walk with her family around her city and every Sunday she plays dominos with her grandmother and elder sister. She also likes to go out with her friends to eat pizza and swim in the summer or go ice skating in the winter.

When she’s not with her family, her favorite activity is volunteering. Currently, she says, “I’m volunteering at a language school. I’m a game designer. I like it because it’s useful for me.” In the future, Aliya dreams of opening a bakery or a clothing boutique.

She is looking forward to trying activities like volleyball and basketball in the U.S. because her school in Kazakhstan does not offer these opportunities. She would also like to be involved in community service. Aliya would be a great fit for a close-knit family who are interested in introducing an exchange student to new things!
