Our Students

American Councils works exclusively with high school (ages 15-17) scholarship students. Alumni include heads of state, educators, entrepreneurs, and more. They are exemplary citizens of their countries and carry their positive experience of the U.S.—especially their host parent or family—throughout their lives. Learn more about some of our Featured Students below.

Salkynai describes herself as an active person who wants to “expand my horizons, to develop, and to learn everything new.”  She hopes to teach others that Kyrgyz people are kind, hardworking and sympathetic. Salkynai is known by all of her friends as the person who will always lend an ear and give amazing advice. She learned these skills from her family and feels fulfilled when she volunteers to help others. She says, “My parents are role models for me. They gave me a lot and I want them to be proud of me, see my achievements in the future, and I want to live up to their expectations.”

Salkynai has been participating in the debate club for the past four years now and feels that it has taught her to be tolerant of differences and respect others, and it has strengthened her public speaking skills. She hopes to sign up for the debate club in her U.S. school, but also will reserve time for learning new activities such as tennis and cheerleading.

Outside of class, Salkynai often challenges her friends to a game of volleyball. She loves getting lost in a good book, especially fantasy novels like her favorite series, Harry Potter. During her FLEX year, she looks forward to participating in activities with her new host family like being a part of an animated crowd at an American football game or sharing peanuts and crackerjacks at a baseball game. She would make a great addition to any host family!
