Salkynai comes from a beautiful, mountainous region of Kyrgyzstan, which she describes as “rich with beautiful nature, clean air, and customs and traditions.” She hopes to teach others that Kyrgyz people like herself are kind, hard-working and sympathetic. “I’m a very active person! I go to many extra lessons after school because I want to expand my horizons, to develop, and to learn everything new.”
Outside of class, Salkynai often challenges her friends to a game of volleyball. She loves getting lost in a good book, especially fantasy novels like her favorite series, Harry Potter. Salkynai has been participating in the debate club for the past four years now and feels that it’s taught her about being tolerant of differences, respecting others, and has strengthened her public speaking skills. She hopes to sign up for the debate club in her U.S. high school too, but also will reserve time for learning new activities, including skateboarding and cheerleading. Being a part of an animated crowd at an American football game and sharing peanuts and crackerjacks with her host family at a baseball game are two events that she’d be delighted to be a part of.
Salkynai is known by all of her friends as the person who will always lend an ear and give amazing advice. She’s learned these skills from her family and feels fulfilled when she volunteers to help others. “My parents are role models for me. They gave me a lot and I want them to be proud of me, see my achievements in the future, and I want to live up to their expectations.”
