Our Students

American Councils works exclusively with high school (ages 15-17) scholarship students. Alumni include heads of state, educators, entrepreneurs, and more. They are exemplary citizens of their countries and carry their positive experience of the U.S.—especially their host parent or family—throughout their lives. Learn more about some of our Featured Students below.

Yelyzaveta (“Lisa”) from Ukraine has many different passions, whether she’s playing sports or following more artistic pursuits. Lisa’s dad is very athletic, and he has taught her a variety of different sports from rollerblading to surfing. In her free time, Lisa also enjoys spending time with friends, especially going for walks, taking pictures, and either sitting outside drinking cocoa in the winter or enjoying the sunshine at the swimming pool when the weather is nicer.

While she loves to stay active, Lisa’s favorite activity is volunteering. She says: “If I see a homeless dog on the street and I have an opportunity to take it with me, then I feed it and keep it a few days while searching for a new owner. I like to see a smile on the face of the person who got his/her pet and how a homeless dog turns out to be happy and loved.” If your family likes to volunteer, especially with animals, Lisa would love to join you!

When she gets to the U.S., Lisa would love to try some new sports, like cheerleading. She’s also curious to learn more about acting and would be very excited to join her school’s drama or theater club. Lisa is just as excited to meet her American family: “I can’t help but admire you because you’ve decided to make that step and host a child to give him or her and amazing opportunity to become a part of your family and get an unforgettable experience!”
