Our Students

American Councils works exclusively with high school (ages 15-17) scholarship students. Alumni include heads of state, educators, entrepreneurs, and more. They are exemplary citizens of their countries and carry their positive experience of the U.S.—especially their host parent or family—throughout their lives. Learn more about some of our Featured Students below.

Alioune from Senegal loves to make new friends, and he can’t wait to make friends in the U.S. during his exchange year. One of his favorite activities is being a leader in his school’s English club; Alioune loves it because “I’ve the possibility to meet new people, to exchange with them, and it allows me to be open, to act like a leader, and to know new things.” In Senegal, Alioune can be found playing soccer or basketball with his friends, but but he would love to try a team sport like football while in America.

Does your family have any favorite holiday traditions? Alioune can’t wait to experience his first American Christmas; if you live in a snowy area, he’d love to try skiing, too!

Alioune’s teachers note that he’s highly motivated and is constantly trying to improve himself. His teacher notes: “[Alioune] is very open-minded; he is responds positively to all the activities in which he participates. As the President of the school’s English Club, he always listens to his peers and he is very encouraging when good ideas are proposed.”

Alioune is very excited to share his culture with you and wants to know all about your family and life in America. He’s ready for a new experience, and hopes to start by learning all about his new family!
