Our Students

American Councils works exclusively with high school (ages 15-17) scholarship students. Alumni include heads of state, educators, entrepreneurs, and more. They are exemplary citizens of their countries and carry their positive experience of the U.S.—especially their host parent or family—throughout their lives. Learn more about some of our Featured Students below.

Maral can’t wait for her exchange year to begin because she loves getting to know new people! Her conversation skills have helped her build close friendships with her peers. She and her friends like to get together to cook, play games, or watch movies. But her favorite hobby is playing the piano, which she has done since she was young. She writes, “[piano is] good to reassure the soul.”

She also loves singing, though she admits her voice is not very good, which is why she is interested in trying singing lessons or classes during her year in the U.S. Maral also hopes to try new activities in the U.S. such as musical theater, basketball, tennis, volunteering, and making presentations about her country.

Family is very important to Maral, and she enjoys spending time with them. Although Maral has many dreams for the future, such as going to university and starting her own business, ultimately she hopes to be able to support her parents because she is very thankful for all they do for her now.

Maral is very excited to experience American culture and to discover its diversity.  She works hard to be the best version of herself she can be, and she is eager to observe new behaviors, a new education system, and new holiday traditions. In return, she hopes to share her country’s traditions and food with her host family!
