Our Support Network

Our Support Network for Host Parents and Students

U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA)

ECA Mission: ECA is committed to increasing mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries through educational and cultural exchanges that support the development of peaceful relations. High school exchanges focus on leadership development, civic engagement, and broadening cultural awareness.

AC administers the programs, oversees and matches each student with an appropriate host family, and is responsible for the student’s safety and well-being while in the U.S. In addition, American Councils supervises its network of local coordinators, who support students and families within designated communities and geographies throughout the country.

A Local Coordinator (located within 120 miles) is assigned to each student and host family and is responsible for monitoring the student and helping them to navigate their experience in the U.S. The Local Coordinator serves as an intermediary between students and host families and is a go-to resource for questions, concerns, and any issues that may arise during the student’s stay.

We support scholarship students from 50+ countries across the globe. Over 32,000 students have participated so far and have volunteered over 1 million hours in the communities in which they lived! Students are eligible to join their program’s alumni network, and alumni are great resources, guides, and friends to students throughout their experience as well as upon returning home.
