American Councils January Student of the Month!

Recently, the International Student Support Team launched an initiative to choose our own Student of the Month separate from the ones chosen each month by the State Department for students on the A-SMYLE, FLEX, and YES programs. Students from all programs are eligible, but they must be American Councils students currently on program. Our first Student of the Month is Sumbul Ali, YES-Pakistan!

FLEX Students Join the Neon Splash Dash in Texas

The Neon Splash Dash 5k is an annual event to raise money and awareness for children's heart disease and research. Eight American Councils FLEX students from Georgia, Armenia, Russia, Kazakhstan, Moldova, Turkmenistan, and Ukraine, along with one American Councils YES student from Egypt, volunteered for over 7 hours during this charity race in Texas, helping to spray the runners as they came through the splash zones.

From Kenya to Iowa and Back: Mwalimu's Dream

During his time in the U.S., Mwalimu (YES '12) from Kenya realized that access to clean water was vastly different across countries. In particular, the bright young scholarship student was struck by the number of water fountains in the U.S.—where the water is fresh and clean—compared his Kenyan village’s man-made dam, riddled with diseases like malaria, in which people walked miles every day to gather water. Mwalimu knew he wanted to bring fresh water to his coastal Kenyan community.
