Our Global Community

We value our host parents, students, and program sponsors.

US Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA)

ECA is committed to increasing mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries through educational and cultural exchanges that support the development of peaceful relations. High school exchanges focus on leadership development, civic engagement, and broadening cultural awareness.

AC administers several large-scale cultural exchange programs, including the high school exchange programs our team supports. Within American Councils, our student support team oversees and matches each student with an appropriate host family and is responsible for the student’s safety and well-being while in the US. In addition, we supervise a network of local coordinators, who support students and families within designated communities and geographies throughout the country. We are proud to place students in every US state!

Local coordinators (LCs) help to place exchange students with volunteer host families, then serve as a link between the host family, local community, and American Councils throughout the academic year. Local coordinators must live within 120 miles of the students and families they support.

We support scholarship students from 50+ countries across the globe. Over 32,000 students have participated so far and have volunteered over one million hours in the communities in which they lived! Students are eligible to join their program’s alumni network, and alumni themselves are great resources, guides, and friends to other students throughout their experience as well as upon returning home.
