We're excited to recognize Mariata from Kiribati as our October Student of the Month! Currently spending her exchange year in Rockwood, Pennsylvania, Mariata has embraced every opportunity to connect with her host community, share her culture, and make a difference in the lives of those around her.
From volunteering at local food banks to cheering on her school's sports teams, Mariata has jumped into her American experience with positivity, enthusiasm, and an infectious smile that has already made a lasting impression on her community.
Mariata has enthusiastically embraced American high school life! She joined her school's cheerleading team, participates in chorus, and is looking forward to new opportunities, including cheering for basketball and potentially joining the school musical. One particularly memorable experience was attending her first Homecoming dance, an American school tradition unlike anything she had experienced back home in Kiribati.
Beyond extracurricular activities, Mariata has been working hard to strengthen her English, public speaking, and technology skills. She's also eager to help classmates with school projects and isn't afraid to ask questions when she encounters something unfamiliar.
Her willingness to participate, learn, and try new things reflects the enthusiasm she's brought to every aspect of her exchange experience.
“She is absolutely the most positive human being you could ever meet…..she can brighten anyone’s day with her smile and infectious personality.”- Martha, Mariata’s Local Coordinator
While Mariata has been busy discovering American traditions, she's equally excited to introduce her new friends and community to the culture of Kiribati. She's shared information about her home country and its flag with classmates.
One especially meaningful moment came when Mariata was recognized as Student of the Month at her American high school in Rockwood! Upon receiving her certificate, she took the opportunity to speak to the school board about Kiribati, present her country's flag, and express her gratitude for the opportunity to study in their community.
One of the most meaningful ways Mariata has connected with her new community is through volunteering. As a member of her school's Community Service Club, she helped pack food bags for children in the school district who experience food insecurity. She's also volunteered with the Somerset County Mobile Food Bank, where community members work together to distribute food to individuals and families in need. Meaningful intergenerational conversations among the volunteers have expanded her network of friends.
Through her volunteer work, Mariata is discovering the power of community connections while making a meaningful difference in her new home.
Mariata has demonstrated what makes cultural exchange so meaningful: a willingness to step outside her comfort zone, build connections across cultures, and contribute positively to her new community.
Congratulations, Mariata, on being named our October Student of the Month! We're so proud of the kindness, energy, and enthusiasm you're bringing to your exchange experience, and we can't wait to see what the rest of your year in Pennsylvania has in store!
