Olivia - UUTI May Student of the Month
When Olivia first arrived in Colorado Springs, Colorado, she couldn’t have imagined just how life-changing her exchange year would be. Like many exchange students, she faced the challenge of stepping outside her comfort zone—every single day. But Olivia didn’t shy away from discomfort; instead, she leaned into the experience with open arms and an open heart.
Back in February, Olivia spoke to students from UUTI Camp during an American Councils Zoom session. Her message was clear and candid: put your phone down and be present. It was advice born from experience—and Olivia lived it fully. That mindset helped shape what would become a truly exceptional year abroad.

Her Local Coordinator (LC), Merry Hammes, noticed her unwavering energy and nominated her for Student of the Month—two months in a row. Why? Because Olivia never hesitated to say “yes.” She consistently sought out ways to give back and get involved, whether it was volunteering at the local Air Force Base to assemble care packages, helping with race day events, participating in food drives, or lending a hand during her school’s Senior Help Out Day.

Exchange isn’t just about travel—it's about transformation. It’s about saying “yes” even when you don’t feel ready. That courage builds resilience, and Olivia exemplified that at every turn.
But Olivia’s story doesn’t stop at volunteering. She dove headfirst into academics, clubs, and athletics. From running cross country in the high-altitude mountains, to singing in choir, joining the Environmental Club, working backstage on theater productions, dancing in performances, playing tennis, and serving on the senior leadership club—Olivia did it all. Her enthusiasm was contagious, and her ever-growing circle of friends is a testament to her warm and outgoing spirit.

Beyond school, Olivia became an ambassador for her home country, Kiribati. She was featured in a local newspaper where she shared her story and culture with the broader community. Despite the emotional weight of attending the funeral of her host mother’s beloved parent, Olivia still followed through with her International Education Presentations—another example of her maturity and commitment.

Her ability to balance personal challenges while still pouring her heart into her exchange goals is what makes Olivia truly remarkable.
As this unforgettable year comes to a close, one thing is certain: Olivia’s journey is just beginning. We can’t wait to see the incredible things she’ll do next.
