Bridging Cultures and Building Connections: Elene’s Story

The cast of the Howards Grove High School production of “Catch Me If You Can.” Elene recalls. “I was nervous during my first performance but seeing everyone’s warm smiles and beautiful costumes made me feel welcome and proud.”

Elene performed in the Howard’s Grove production of “Catch Me if you Can.”

Elene’s exchange year has been a testament to the power of curiosity, resilience, and open-hearted connection. We are proud to recognize her as this month’s April’s FLEX Student of the Month!

Elene describes her exchange year in Wisconsin as “memorable, challenging, and rewarding,” and it’s clear that those words only begin to capture her incredible journey. Living in a small host community, Elene embraced local agricultural traditions and seasonal celebrations, forming deep connections with her host family, classmates, and neighbors along the way.

In reflecting about American culture, Elene notes that while Americans value independence, they also have a strong sense of community. Her experience has been one of being warmly welcomed, sincere interest in learning about her culture and a dedication to helping others. Elene shared, “I’ve seen how kindness and friendly conversations can create real connections, even between people from different backgrounds.”

Elene received a barrage of meaningful questions from curious middle school students at her cultural presentation on Georgia at the Howard’s Grove Middle School.

I’ve seen how kindness and friendly conversations can create real connections, even between people from different backgrounds.

An important relationship I’ve made is with my host dad. He has been incredibly supportive, always making sure I feel comfortable and included. He also takes the time to answer my questions and helps me understand things that are new to me. This relationship is special because he has made me feel like part of the family.”

While the year came with its share of challenges—adapting to a new culture, navigating language barriers, and stepping outside her comfort zone—Elene approached each experience with grace and resilience.

At Howard Grove High School, Elene has been a shining example of both academic dedication and social engagement. She joined the school’s Future Farmers of America (FFA) chapter, where she explored agriculture and rural life in America, while also building leadership and teamwork skills. Through FFA, Elene helped create holiday planters to decorate the school, purchased Christmas gifts for children in need, and developed a deep appreciation for the values and rhythms of life in her host community.

Elene volunteered at fundraising events for important community needs such as fundraising for the local fire department as well as staffing concessions during school sporting events.

Elene didn’t stop there. She jumped wholeheartedly into school and extracurricular life—joining the tennis team, performing in the school musical and play, and competing in Forensics. Most recently, she earned a silver ribbon at the Wisconsin Forensics Competition for her speech performance, a remarkable achievement showcasing her growth in public speaking and self-confidence.

With 78 hours of community service under her belt, Elene’s impact in her host community is undeniable. From Christmas caroling at local nursing homes and packing food pantry items at a local church, to volunteering at a fire department fundraiser and tutoring middle school students in math and social studies, Elene’s generous spirit has touched many.

As an enthusiastic ambassador for her home country of Georgia, Elene found many ways to share her culture. Whether it was teaching Georgian language to friends, preparing traditional dishes, or giving a heartfelt presentation at a local church, she brought Georgian traditions and values to life for those around her. One of her favorite memories of the year was presenting about Georgia to a multigenerational audience—showing pictures, telling everyday stories, and answering thoughtful questions. The interest and warmth she received reminded her just how meaningful cultural exchange can be.

Elene tutors middle school students several afternoons a week.

Elene plays chess with middle school students mentoring them on strategy.
