Our Students

American Councils works exclusively with high school (ages 15-17) scholarship students. Alumni include heads of state, educators, entrepreneurs, and more. They are exemplary citizens of their countries and carry their positive experience of the U.S.—especially their host parent or family—throughout their lives. Learn more about some of our Featured Students below.

Asel is a very busy and active young lady as a member of a volunteering organization that helps organize debates and tournaments, and she says, “I like this work because it’s a great experience for me in forming leadership and expressing my own ideas. Also, I can help young people in reaiizng their ideas.” In addition to this, she enjoys drawing, listening to music, and reading books from authors like J.R.R. Tolkien and J.K. Rowling. She also likes anime and listening to Korean pop music.

Above all, Asel’s favorite hobby is learning languages. She hopes to master five languages by the age of 18, and she is currently learning German and Korean in addition to English and her native Kyrgyz and Russian. She hopes mastering these languages allows her to travel and see the world before she settles down and starts her own business!

Asel is very interested in trying out new activities when she’s in the U.S. such as basketball and drama. She also can’t wait to meet her future host family and wants you to know: “I can show you a lot of sides of my beautiful country. It’s also very interesting to learn more about your people, traditions, and tasty food!”
